| Objectives |
Completing the course, students are expected to
- understand and be able to explain main concepts of gender statistics (equality, equity, gender mainstreaming, etc.; measurements, indices, etc.).
- know and be able to research and apply current data and statistical indicators that illustrate social power dynamics or can be used to measure equality.
- be able to critically evaluate the explanatory potential and limits of various international gender indicators.

| Subject |
Statistical data and indicators can illustrate social realities, differences and communalities between groups. Moreover, timelines are useful tools to show social change or stagnation over time and thus, help to indicate the success or failure of social policies. Critically analyzing and evaluating the available data can shed light on power structures and inequalities in society. While numbers themselves do not evoke social change, they provide the information needed to understand inequalities and draft plans of how to tackle them. This course offers the basic set of skills required to critically and responsibly use statistical data for the purpose of promoting gender equality and equity.

Attendance; researching and presenting indicators; participating in discussions and group work both in class and via the learning platform; review.

Discussion of various international indicators: Global Gender Gap Report, Gender-related Development Index (GDI), Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM), Gender Pay Gap, Glass-ceiling Index, etc.

About the course instructor: Kristin Eckstein (*1973) studied Educational Science with a focus on evaluation in Salzburg. Since 2006, she works at the University of Graz in quality management (equal opportunities, gender budgeting, intellectual capital statement, strategic analyses). She teaches Social Science research methods, Statistics and Gender Studies (2001-2005 in Salzburg; since 2006 in Graz).
