Objectives This course is designed to help students

  • understand Process Writing by practicing planning, drafting, revising, editing an academic paper
  • deal with various registers and styles in written English
  • understand the difference between popular, academic, and business writing
  • evaluate and use resources in writing
  • expand their vocabulary
  • learn revision and exam writing strategies
  • practice self-evaluation and reflective writing

  • Writing proposals, outlines, summaries, abstracts, bio-data
  • Writing a full academic paper
  • Punctuating, editing, proofreading
  • Understanding differences in registers and text types: plain English, colloquial English, slang, jargon, dialect
  • Understanding conventions of use in written and spoken English
  • Effectively using synonyms and text cohesion markers
  • Effectively expanding formal register
  • Effectively presenting results in a paper, poster, and presentation
  • Refining research and note-taking skills

Criteria for evaluation The grade in this course is a composite of all work in class and on weekly written assignments, paper presentation and poster (50%) and a 2000-2500 word topic paper (50%).
