Original study plan Master's programme Computer Science 2013W
Objectives Students know the areas of application and algorithmic principles of selected protocols, which are required for operating and managing computer networks. They understand fundamental relations and the cooperation/interaction of these protocols. In combination with the experience obtained by the practical work in the network lab when installing and configuring network devices, this know-how provides a good knowledge base to efficiently become acquainted with special problems in the network area.
Subject Exemplary content: Function and application of network management systems, VLANs, (Multiple) Spanning Tree Protocol, Link Aggregation, 802.1X, Radius, SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol), VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol), routing protocols (e.g. RIP, OSPF), QoS (Quality of Service), Load Balancing, Trill (Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links). These topics are presented as an overview. A selected set is discussed in greater detail and is also practiced in the hands-on labs.
Criteria for evaluation Grading is based on class participation in lab exercises, written summaries and the final written examination. To pass the course, students must successfully pass all three sections.
Methods Practical examples in the network lab complement and extend the lectures and accompanied discussions.
