Ziele This introductory course to Chinese has been designed for students with little or no previous exposure to Chinese. The course objective is to help students build a solid foundation in four basic skills--listening, speaking, reading, and writing -- in an interactive and communicative learning environment. The emphasis is on correct pronunciation and intonation as well as mastering basic grammatical structures. By the end of the semester, students should be able to manage basic situations such as introducing themselves, talking about families and school, asking for permission, purchasing goods, etc. In order to achieve these goals, students are strongly encouraged to thoroughly study and review the course materials as well as actively participate in class.
Lehrinhalte During the first four weeks, we will work on preparation (lessons 0.1-0.7) and from the 5th week on, we will cover one lesson per week in the textbook.
Beurteilungskriterien Students will be graded as follows:

  • Quizzes (5) 25%
  • Oral Presentation (4) 20%
  • Oral Exam (1) 10%
  • Final Exam 25%
  • Others 20% (Attendance 10%, Homework 10%)
  • Total 100%
Lehrmethoden Oral Presentations

  • In order to develop listening and speaking skills, there will be a weekly oral presentation beginning from the 5th week onwards. During the presentation, students are expected to complete an oral communication task. The oral task topic and requirement will be assigned in class in advance. The purpose of the oral task is two-fold: 1) to help students fully utilize learned vocabulary and grammatical structures, and 2) to gradually increase the ability to communicate in Chinese. The oral presentations are graded according to the following criteria: pronunciation, tones, grammar, and coherence.

Quizzes

  • There will be a quiz for each lesson. Quizzes will review material from the previous lesson.

Homework

  • Students are required to complete assigned writing practices and exercises in the Character Book and Exercise Book. It is expected that all exercises be handed in on time to be graded.

This course is supported by WebCT/Blackboard system which provides an online, interactive environment for both student and instructor to communicate and share information. Students are encouraged to take the online training course to master its functions and maximize benefit for language acquisition. Students are also encouraged to work individually with the instructor to practice correct pronunciation and intonation.
