Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students gain experience in understanding the design of clinical studies and are able to apply key methods of descriptive and inductive statistics. They are able to analyze data correctly using these methods and interpret statistical analyses and results correctly. Furthermore, students have developed statistical thinking competencies and are well prepared for more complex statistical methods.

  • Identify the appropriate clinical study design for their own research
  • Calculate and interpret descriptive summary statistics
  • Visualise data with charts
  • Calculate and interpret correlation coefficients and measures of association
  • Apply common statistical distribution models (e.g. normal distribution, …)
  • Make estimates based on samples (point estimation /confidence interval estimation)
  • Perform and interpret common statistical tests
  • Use a program package to perform statistical analyses
  • How to choose the appropriate design for a clinical study
  • Apply statistical methods correctly
  • Interpret statistical results correctly
  • Create and interpret charts
  • Estimate unknown parameters of a population
  • Test hypotheses about unknown parameters of a population
Criteria for evaluation Attendance of at least 80 % Students are assessed throughout the course by discussing small homework examples as well as in a final written exam.

Further information Students are required to assess their prior knowledge by completing the online self-assessment test available on the doctoral program’s Moodle page. Students who do not achieve a satisfactory result are expected to attend this course before attending the course "Statistics in Medical Sciences".
