| (*)Students performing animal research in the context of their doctoral projects, will develop the capacity to conduct animal research in accordance with relevant EU legislation and ethical guidelines. This involves integration of the 3Rs principles (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) into the design and execution of scientific procedures. Participants will be able to evaluate animal biology, husbandry, and normal behavior to proactively recognize and minimize pain, suffering, distress, or lasting harm. Furthermore, they will master species-appropriate handling, administration of substances, and application of humane endpoints.

(*)- Applying legislative requirements and ethical guidelines while conducting scientific procedures.
- Executing safe and appropriate handling and restraint techniques tailored to the specific laboratory animal species.
- Assessment and monitoring of behavioral and physiological signs of pain, suffering, or distress in a laboratory setting.
- Applying refinement techniques during the execution of procedures to minimize animal discomfort and improve welfare.
- Identifying and implementing humane endpoints in real-time and performing appropriate methods of euthanasia.

(*)A valid certificate of attendance from an accredited European course, or from a course within a master’s or doctoral program at another domestic or foreign university, must be submitted to Doktorat_MED@jku.at.
