(*)Upon completion of this course, students will be able to develop a structured approach to understanding and analyzing current topics in translational medicine, with a particular focus on dermatology. Building on contemporary areas of emphasis, students formulate their own research questions and learn to design and test problem centered research strategies. In addition, they gain experience in preparing and delivering presentations, engaging in subject specific discussions with fellow students, instructors, and external guest speakers, and exchanging constructive feedback.

Beurteilungskriterien (*)The course has an intrinsic examination character and attendance is compulsory. Even in the case of justified absence with the approval of the course director, a minimum attendance of 75% must be achieved. It is up to the course director to decide whether a substitute performance is required for a positive completion in the case of justified absence. Students are also required to give an oral presentation on an assigned article from the field of translational medicine with a problem-addressing research strategy and to actively participate in discussions and feedback sessions.
Lehrmethoden (*)
  • Lecturer Presentations and Guest Lectures: Students participate in presentations delivered by faculty members or invited external experts.
  • Inverted Classroom:
    • Study of Scientific Articles: Students read and work through selected scientific articles from the field of translational medicine. Example topic areas include:
      • Dermato-oncology: Focus on innate immune systems, pathogen-induced immunosuppression, and immunological mechanisms underlying resistance to cancer therapies.
      • Immunodermatology: Molecular profiling strategies for stratification and therapeutic guidance in patients with treatment resistant inflammatory skin diseases.
      • Development of integrated diagnostic approaches that combine dermatopathology with modern molecular methods (e.g., multiplex immunophenotyping, genetic profiling, spatial transcriptomics) and clinical pattern recognition.
    • Analysis and Presentation: Based on the scientific literature, students formulate their own research questions, outline a problem centered research strategy, conduct analyses and meta-analyses using example datasets, and present their findings and results.
  • Discussion & Feedback: Topic related discussions, Q&A sessions, and constructive feedback provided by instructors and participants.
