Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to understand fundamental concepts from the areas of biophysics listed below, apply biophysical ways of thinking and problem-solving methods, and transfer these to specific physical, chemical, and biological systems.
Skills Knowledge
By attending this course, students will acquire the following skills. They will be able to

  • understand and explain fundamental concepts and phenomena in biophysics (k1/k2);
  • formulate and interpret biophysical and biochemical laws and theories in a precise and analytical manner (k3);
  • apply the principles of biophysics and biochemistry to other advanced biological and biophysical problems (k3).
During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of biophysics:

  • statistical thermodynamics;
  • nucleotide, sugar, lipid, and protein structure;
  • non-covalent interactions;
  • calorimetric and microscopic methods;
  • self-organization of membranes, lipid mobility;
  • osmosis, Fick's laws of diffusion;
  • diffusion in electric fields; electrokinetic phenomena; electrochemical double layers; transport processes;
  • electrical potentials (resting and action potentials); electrical and chemical stimulus transmission.
Criteria for evaluation Assessment is based on a written examination. Evaluation focuses on correctness, clarity of reasoning, and understanding of the underlying physical concepts.
Methods The course content is delivered through lectures.
