Learning Outcomes
Competences
  1. Select appropriate testing and characterization methods for plastics and evaluate their relevance regarding mechanical and thermomechanical properties. (k3, k5)
  2. Systematically characterize commonly used commodity, engineering, and high-performance plastics based on their (thermo)mechanical property profiles and classify them comparatively. (k4)
  3. Evaluate test results in accordance with standards, interpret them critically, and communicate them in a structured manner. (k4, k5)
Skills Knowledge
  1. Interpret and compare multi-point characteristic values of plastics. (k4)
  2. Prepare test specimens in accordance with standards. (k3)
  3. Operate testing equipment safely and record measurement data accurately. (k3). Process measurement data and perform structured data reduction. (k3,k4)
  4. Understand the differences between specification, certificate, and material ranking. (k2)
  5. Test plastics from a polymer physics perspective and differentiate materials accordingly. (k4)
  6. Classify commodity, engineering, and high-performance plastics according to their (thermo)mechanical properties. (k4)
  • Key property categories and property profiles of polymer materials (k2)
  • Areas of material testing and characterization of plastics (k2)
  • Fundamentals of standardization in plastics testing (k2)
  • Structure and key elements of relevant testing standards with focus on ISO standards (k2)
  • Testing methods for determining mechanical and non-mechanical properties (k2)
  • Testing procedures for plastics and composite materials (k2)
  • Fundamentals of experimental procedures, documentation, and presentation of laboratory results (k2)
Criteria for evaluation Written examination with transparent points system and allocation of grades; oral examination to improve grades in the event of a positive written examination only possible within 6 months on request in accordance with the statutes (§35).
Methods Lectures with PPT and distribution of templates; practical demonstration examples on a case-by-case basis.
Language German
Changing subject? No
Further information The subject of plastics technology is used for the scientific and technical professional training of plastics technicians and qualifies students for further Master's studies with a focus on plastics technology, economic technology or chemical technology.

In particular, the subject of plastics engineering is used to teach practical and theoretical content from materials science and testing of polymer materials, general and special characterization of polymers, plastics processing, plastics machine and tool construction, applied thermal engineering and rheology, dimensioning and design of plastic and composite components and component testing

Short repetitions in English in the following course; documents in German and/or English, if available.

This course is held either in German or English in consultation with the students. At the very least, documents or book recommendations will be provided in German and English. The examination can be taken in either German or English.
