Kompetenzen
(*)Students will know the key aspects of biological chemistry based on selected examples that involve the chemistry orchestrated by biological macromolecules. They will understand the relevance of organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry for the molecular basis of chemistry and catalysis in biology, and can provide examples of this. In the end, they will be able to develop an integrative scientific approach and understand how fundamental molecular concepts underpin modern medicine and biotechnology.
Fertigkeiten Kenntnisse
(*)Students can name a number of biological macromolecules and their roles in biochemistry (k1). Students can describe different but common chemical reactions that occur in biology and give examples (k1,k2). Students can give examples of organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry to describe chemical reactions in biology (k3). Students can explain how protein and enzyme structures support the chemistry of life (k3). (*)- Molecular structure and biochemical concepts - Protein composition and structure at several levels - Introductory concepts in enzyme function and how they enhance the rates of chemical reactions - Basic principles of organic and inorganic chemical reactivity - Basic principles of (bio)chemical analysis - Molecular mechanisms underlying selected diseases and therapies, illustrated by real-world examples
