Upon completion of this course, students will be able to
- Write coherent, structured, critically evaluative, fact-based academic texts in accordance with task instructions and guidelines.
- Evaluate and synthesize information from multiple academic sources in order to present an original argument based on personal interpretation.
- Integrate visual elements such as a figures and tables in support of their arguments.
- Apply appropriate citation and referencing conventions to avoid plagiarism and ensure academic integrity.
- Reflect upon their own writing progress and apply feedback to improve content, structure and language use.
Course Goals
The AWE course objectives are as follows:
- Improve students' ability to write clear, coherent, and well-structured academic papers.
- Enhance fluency and accuracy in expressing complex ideas in a formal academic style.
- Teach students to critically evaluate and synthesize information from multiple academic sources.
- Expand academic vocabulary and use of advanced grammatical structures.
- Develop students’ ability to correctly cite and reference sources using established citation formats (e.g., APA, MLA).
- Encourage reflective writing through the creation of a writing diary to track progress and self-assessment.
- Provide training in integrating visual elements, such as figures and tables, into academic writing.
- Guide students in preparing and delivering a poster presentation summarizing their academic paper.
- Foster a process-oriented approach to writing, emphasizing revision, peer feedback, and self-improvement

By the end of the course, students will be able to
- Produce a well-organized academic paper of 2500-3000 words, with a clear thesis, coherent paragraphs, logical progression, and correct use of references and bibliography.
- Critically evaluate and respond to facts, ideas and claims from academic sources in different media (multimodal sources).
- Prepare and deliver a poster presentation that summarizes the final academic paper, focusing on key arguments and findings.
- Incorporate feedback from peers and instructors to revise and improve writing, with a focus on accuracy, clarity and coherence.
All of the above aim to consolidate and improve the students’ English writing, reading, listening and speaking skills at C1 level (according to the CEFR criteria

Upon completion of this course students will demonstrate an understanding of
- The characteristics and conventions of academic writing, including tone, register and structure.
- Key academic writing strategies such as argumentation, paraphrasing, summarizing and synthesizing information.
- Correct citation and referencing techniques (e.g., APA, MLA, Harvard)
- Vocabulary and grammatical structures relevant to academic writing, including cohesive devices, hedging, and modality.
- The process of peer review, self-assessment, and revision as part of academic writing improvement

- 80% attendance and active participation
Your grade will comprise:
- First draft of an academic paper
- Final draft of an academic paper
- Individual homework, writing diary
- In-class assignment
- Poster presentation

- Language input from instructors (i.e., grammar points, academic vocabulary and phrases)
- In-class discussion (in plenum, in small groups, in pairs)
