Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students are able to select a topic or case study from the list of relevant events or policy measures in the realm of the seminar. They can select, read, and understand the related academic literature. Depending on the focus of the seminar, students make independent use of a theoretical model or collect data to investigate the selected event or policy measure using a suitable empirical method. Students can present their theoretical or empirical results in a seminar presentation and concisely summarize them in a seminar paper, research or policy brief for executive use.

Seminar Goals: Students are able to independently apply core theoretical and empirical methods in the fields of international, monetary and macroeconomics to the solution of own practical research questions. They obtain and interpret empirical results, draw conclusions and derive recommendations about the consequences and effects of exogenous events or economic policy measures.

Skills Knowledge
  • Learning Outcome 2 (LO2): Students acquire structural thinking and presentation skills by preparing preliminary research pitches and a final presentation of their research question for the seminar.
  • Learning Outcome 3 (LO3): Students critically read and understand the relevant literature and relate their own use case to the existing literature.
  • Learning Outcome 4 (LO4): Students learn to independently adapt a theoretical model or collect data and apply a suitable empirical method to the research question at hand.
  • Learning Outcome 5 (LO5): Students can present their theoretical or empirical results in a presentation and concisely summarize them in a seminar paper or another written form.
Learning Outcome 1 (LO1): Students understand the purpose of the seminar and select a topic or case study from the list of relevant events or economic policy measures.
Criteria for evaluation The final grade in this seminar is based on the students’ research pitches and final presentation as well as their seminar paper (or other written document) according to the following weights:

  • Research pitches & Final presentation: 50%
  • Seminar paper (or other written document): 50%

Synchronization of learning outcomes and assessments:

  • LO1: Research pitches & Final presentation
  • LO2: Research pitches & Final presentation
  • LO3: Final presentation & Seminar paper
  • LO4: Final presentation & Seminar paper
  • LO5: Final presentation & Seminar paper
Methods The seminar starts with a series of introductory lectures to present 1. The topic, data sources, and exemplary use cases, 2. Advanced theoretical models suitable for the research question(s) at hand, 3. Advanced empirical research methods suitable for the research question(s) at hand.

The seminar participants and instructor(s) then meet in regular intervals 1. To give brief research pitches on use case(s) selected by the students, 2. Discuss potential issues with the sample, data availability, and methodology, 3. Ensure the progress of the seminar project and discuss preliminary results.
