  • They can assess the application of comparative methods to social science research questions.
  • They can develop suitable comparative research designs for their own research questions.

  • Identify different types of qualitative and quantitative comparative approaches and analyse their suitability for specific research contexts (k4).
  • Conduct diachronic comparisons and methodologically reflect on temporal developments (k4).
  • Examine interdependencies between political and societal systems and recognise their challenges for comparative analysis (k5).
  • Develop policy typologies and apply them to the analysis and evaluation of political processes (k6).
  • Apply and critically evaluate research techniques used in comparative analysis (k5).
  • Design and implement their own comparative research projects (k6).
  • Functions and theoretical foundations of comparisons in social science and societal contexts.
  • Methodological foundations of comparative analysis, particularly classical small-N comparative designs (Mill’s Methods).
  • Principles of periodisation and temporal structuring in comparative research.
  • Research perspectives from historical social science and their relevance for societal comparisons.
  • Global interdependencies as both a challenge and opportunity for comparative analysis.
  • Tools and techniques for applied research in comparative studies (e.g. benchmarking, spider maps, scatter plots, etc.).
Criteria for evaluation (*)Mündliche Präsentation und Moderation der Seminardiskussion zu einer inhaltlichen Einheit der LVA. Schriftliche Ausarbeitung oder Dokumentation dieser inhaltlichen Diskussion, Abschlussklausur, mündliche Beiträge zur Seminardiskussion.
Methods (*)Kurze Präsentationen von der LVA-Leitung, gemeinsame Erarbeitung der Funktionsweise des Vergleichs in Beispielen verschiedener Erscheinungsformen vergleichender Analyse, Diskussion von Methodentexten zur Rolle des Vergleichs
