Kompetenzen
(*)Students will master the methods of economic and business analytics and be able to apply them in different fields of application. Students will be able to identify relevant research questions, translate them into testable hypotheses and produce convincing empirical analyses.

Course Goals

The seminar is a compulsory part of the JKU Master Programme in Economic and Business Analytics. Students gain the ability to present their own research and defend their empirical findings from their Master's thesis. Students develop their research skills and learn to

  • Identify research questions
  • formulate testable hypotheses
  • collect and process the necessary data
  • apply adequate empirical methodology
  • interpret their findings
Fertigkeiten Kenntnisse
(*)
  • Learning Outcome 3 (LO3): Use appropriate data sources and process data so that it can be used in empirical analysis.
  • Learning Outcome 4 (LO4): Apply and evaluate appropriate analytical methods to data.
  • Learning Outcome 5 (LO5): Interpret findings critically, draw conclusions, and identify limitations of one’s own analysis.
(*)
  • Learning Outcome 1 (LO1): Conduct independent research
  • Learning Outcome 2 (LO2): Apply research methods appropriately and recognize their limitations
Beurteilungskriterien (*)In addition to attending the Master's thesis seminar, EBA students are expected to give two presentations.

The first (concept) presentation should take place after about 30 % of the work has been completed. It includes the research question, a detailed literature review, and a description of the methodology and data to be used. This first presentation is also the Master’s thesis colloquium which has to be marked by the supervisor. Therefore, presentations in the seminar will be agreed with the supervisor and should only take place if the supervisor feels that the student is ready to present.

The second (final) presentation covers the chosen research strategy. It recalls the data and methodology used, presents the results and concludes. Limitations of the analysis and further research needs should also be mentioned. This presentation will also be agreed with the supervisor. The student will be formally assessed by the seminar tutors once the final presentation has been given. The assessment will be based on the content and novelty of the research, the presentation of the results and whether the methodology and data are adequately explained.

Lehrmethoden (*)The presentation and oral discussion of one's own research is at the heart of the learning methods used in the seminar. Presenters are expected to answer questions from both the lecturers and the seminar audience. Students learn from each other. They offer constructive criticism and share their own experiences in connection with the preparation of their Master's thesis.

The seminar supports the development of the student's Master's thesis. Students are expected to prepare (1) a concept presentation and (2) a final presentation and to address open questions. The concept presentation reflects the current state of the thesis, the final presentation includes all results and their interpretation.

Seminar tutors and supervisors

  1. enable students to carry out original independent research
  2. sensitise students to a critical review of the literature
  3. equip students to translate interesting research questions into an appropriate empirical framework for scientific analysis
  4. enable students to choose which research methods are (not) appropriate for which research questions
  5. teach students how to correctly interpret their own empirical results
  6. guide students to recognise the weaknesses and limitations of their analysis
Abhaltungssprache Englisch
