(*)Students are able to understand the theoretical background of causal econometric methods, develop a suitable application to tackle a particular research question or evaluate a particular policy change, and interpret the results based on the principles of causal inference.

Course Goals This course covers core micro-econometric methods and the principles of causal inference to evaluate policy measures. The course builds upon and extends the material covered in Empirical Economics. Building on the basics of econometric modelling, we will discuss the interpretation of causal estimation models and the implications for policy evaluation. We will cover matching methods, fixed-effects estimation, difference-in-difference estimators, instrumental-variables approach, and regression discontinuity design. Both experimental and quasi-experimental approaches to causal inference and program evaluation will be covered.

The emphasis will be on developing a solid understanding of the underlying econometric principles of the methods taught, as well as on their empirical application for the evaluation of policy and programs. Theory, background and examples will be covered in lectures, while the exercises given in intensifying courses will allow students to apply the theory to practical examples using STATA.

Fertigkeiten Kenntnisse
(*)You should be able to

  • apply core methods of causal inference taught in the course on relevant research topics.
  • interpret results obtained from various econometric approaches.
  • read and understand studies that apply causal methods to investigate actual economic issues relevant for economic or social policy.
(*)You should know

  • the formal and practical aspects of important microeconometric methods for causal inference.
  • when and how to apply core methods of causal inference and these methods’ limitations.
  • how to interpret result and distinguish between causal inference and correlation analyses
Beurteilungskriterien (*)In total, students have the possibility to reach 80 points, 50 (62.5 %) for the exam and 30 (37.5 %) for an article report in small groups. A minimum of 26 points at the exam is necessary in order to obtain a positive grade.

Final grades will be given as follows:

PointsGrade
< 415
41 - 504
51 - 603
61 - 702
71 - 801
  1. Exam: Individual exam, there is a possibility to repeat it in case of negative results or scheduling issues (retry exam). The exam consists of theoretical questions concerning specific causal models, as well as practical question concerning interpretation of results and drawing conclusions on policy measures. It lasts 90 minutes.
  2. Take-hom: groups of 2-4 students have to select a published article and write a detailed report on methods, results, and the relation to the literature. The report has to be submitted via MOODLE. Feedback is also provided in a separate (non-mandatory) meeting.
Lehrmethoden (*)The course uses a combination of different teaching methods in order to

  1. maximize the motivation and attention of the students.
  2. address the learning objectives in the didactically best way.

This includes the following

  • Weekly theoretical inputs on methods of causal inference, supported by slides and literature.
  • Development of further understanding by referencing additional example from the literature.
  • Take-home assignments to be handled in groups (reports on applications of underlying methods).
