(*)Students should be able to read and understand original research papers and journal articles that make use of the concepts and methods that are introduced in the course make use of the course content in their own academic work, for example in analyses that are part of their Master thesis.
Course Goals
This intensifying course will deepen the understanding of core micro-econometric methods and the principles of causal inference to evaluate policy measures. It builds upon and extends the material covered in the course Treatment Evaluation, and practical use of theoretical concepts and methods of causal inference will enable students to investigate relevant questions concerning economic and social policy making.
The emphasis will be on developing a solid understanding of the underlying econometric principles of the methods taught, as well as on their empirical application. While the course will lay the theoretical foundations, the practical exercises given in intensifying courses will allow students to apply the theory to practical examples using statistical software (STATA).

(*)Based on theoretical foundations laid out in the course, students will acquire skills in using statistical software (Stata) in performing relevant analyses on economic data will be developed through exercises and examples as homework assignments. Students will also be able to interpret estimation output. Students will also learn how to review original research papers, make a detailed report on the methods and findings, and take on a critical perspective.
|
(*)The intensifying course develops knowledge of both the formal and practical aspects of important microeconometric methods to make causal inference. Students will be able to understand when to apply a method, how to apply this method and the method’s limitations. This also covers model specification and being able to correctly interpret estimation results. Mastering the program of the intensifying course will allow students to understand much of the modern applied microeconometric literature, and will enable them to implement the econometric analyses themselves.

Beurteilungskriterien |
(*)Students are required to work on problem sets individually at home and prepare them for the meetings. Five problem sets can to be completed and uploaded before the meeting. Each problem set can yield a maximum of 10 points. To reach a positive grade, students need a minimum of 26 points (50%). To get credit for a problem set’s points, students need to be present at the meeting where the problem set is discussed.
Final grades will be given as follows:
Points | Grade |
< 26 | 5 |
26 - 31 | 4 |
32 - 37 | 3 |
38 - 43 | 2 |
44 - 50 | 1 |
|
Lehrmethoden |
(*)Students will have a meeting every second week and discuss or present their work on take-home exercises. These will be uploaded (in Moodle) after the previous meeting. During intensifying course meetings, best-practise solutions will be introduced to students. These meetings will further enhance students’ abilities to make practical use of causal methods in microeconometrics, while interpreting the results correctly and within the abilities of the method of choice.
