Kompetenzen
(*)Students are able to present and motivate an academic research question for a general audience. They can explain the choice and suitability of their preferred theoretical or empirical approach as well as potential limitations and problems. Students are able to present and discuss the results of their analysis, their robustness, and possible implications for (economic) policy makers.

Seminar Goals: The purpose of the Master’s Thesis Seminar is to supervise the progress and provide feedback to students during the writing of their Master’s Thesis.

  • Learning Outcome 2 (LO2): Students acquire structural thinking and presentation skills by preparing the presentation of their research question for the Master’s Thesis Seminar.
  • Learning Outcome 3 (LO3): Students learn to choose and explain the suitable theoretical or empirical research method(s) to answer the research question at hand.
  • Learning Outcome 4 (LO4): Students critically read and understand the relevant literature and relate their own research findings to the existing literature.
  • Learning Outcome 5 (LO5): Students understand possible limitations to the robustness of their research findings are able to draw (economic) policy conclusions.
(*)Learning Outcome 1 (LO1): Students understand the purpose and benefit of presentations in order to explain an academic research question for a general audience.
Beurteilungskriterien (*)The final grade in this seminar is based on the students’ two presentations and their participation in the discussion in class according to the following weights:

  • First presentation: 30%
  • Second presentation: 40%
  • Participation in class: 30%

Students must attend a minimum of 80% of all seminar meetings during the semester.

Lehrmethoden (*)This seminar combines a brief general introduction by the lecturer(s) with student presentations to

  • foster students’ presentation and discussion skills for a topic where they are experts,
  • help the understanding of fellow students for various research questions, theoretical and empirical methods, results, possible limitations, and policy conclusions.
  • encourage students to discuss and provide feedback on each other’s research question(s), theoretical or empirical method(s), and result(s).
