Students are able to interpret and critically analyse data and statistics in the context of gender equality and gender equity. They have the competence to use gender indicators to analyse power relations and the successes of gender equality policy.In doing so, they practise responsible and critical treatment of data and indicators in gender equality policy contexts.

- Students are able to define (k1) and explain (k2) the basic concepts of gender statistics (k1).
- They are able to research, apply, and analyze current data and indicators on gender equality and gender equity (k3, k4).
- Students are able to compare different gender indicators, evaluate them and critically assess their significance and limitations (k4, k5).
- They can interpret data and statistics in the context of gender equality (k2) and evaluate the effectiveness of gender equality policy (k5).

Students are familiar with basic concepts of gender statistics such as equality, equal opportunities and gender mainstreaming. They understand the importance of data and indicators as instruments for visualising power relations and measuring gender equality successes. Students are familiar with various international examples of gender indicators and know the limits of the informative value of indicators and understand how to critically assess them.

Discussion of various international indicators: Global Gender Gap Report, Gender-related Development Index (GDI), Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM), Gender Pay Gap, Glass-ceiling Index, etc.

About the course instructor: Kristin Eckstein (*1973) studied Educational Science with a focus on evaluation in Salzburg. Since 2006, she works at the University of Graz in quality management (equal opportunities, gender budgeting, intellectual capital statement, strategic analyses). She teaches Social Science research methods, Statistics and Gender Studies (2001-2005 in Salzburg; since 2006 in Graz).
