Special competence in computer science can be acquired in three different ways by choosing courses from the Master's degree programs in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the JKU for a minimum total of 12 ECTS credits or 6 ECTS credits if a specialization is chosen. Please note: If a lecture is accompanied by an exercise course, both courses must be completed. Courses that largely overlap with the content of compulsory subjects in Business Information Systems are excluded from the choice. These are listed in the study handbook. The three types are explained below:
(a) Choice of courses from one subject: By selecting 12, 18, or 24 ECTS from a single subject specified by the table below. Alternative (a) may be chosen two times for separate subjects where each must account for 12 ECTS and is headed "Special competence in informatics - X" in the graduation certificate, where X is the name of the subject from which courses were chosen.
(b) Free combination of courses: By choosing 6 or 12 ECTS from compulsory and elective courses from the Master's degree program in Computer Science and the subjects “Machine Learning and Perception” and “Symbolic AI and Mathematical Foundations” from the Master's degree program in Artificial Intelligence. Variant (b) may only be chosen once and is listed as the subject “Special competence in Computer Science - Selected Topics in Computer Science (Master)”. A choice of 6 ECTS credits is only permitted if another subject according to (a) or the subject “Ausgewählte Themen der Informatik (Master, Ausland)” (see § 3) or if the degree program is completed with a specialization.
(c) Choice of courses as specified by a focus of study: By selecting courses of the subject "Special competence in informatics" as specified by a focus of study according to § 9, if the study is completed with this focus of study. Alternative (c) is headed "Special competence in informatics - Focus of study" in the graduation certificate.
In case of lectures with accompanying exercise, both courses have to be taken.
Courses that overlap to a large extent concerning contents with compulsory subjects of Business Informatics are excluded from the choice. These are:
- KV Basic Methods of Data Analysis (3)
- KV Integrated Information Systems (3)
- KV Knowledge Based Systems (3)
- KV Conceptual Data Modeling (3)
- KV Semantic Data Modeling and Applications (3)
- VL Ethics and Gender Studies (3)
- KV Computational Data Analytics (3)
The type of exam of the assigned subjects in the context of the master curriculum Business Informatics is an accumulative subject examination.
