Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students should be familiar with the basics of mathematics and its application in economic contexts. Simple mathematical problems with an economic background can be formulated mathematically and solved using standard methods. Furthermore, students should also be able to tackle problems of realistic scale using computer-based tools, in order to be prepared for the real-world use of mathematics in their future careers.
Skills Knowledge
Basic mathematical methods (as outlined in "knowledge") should be mastered and can be manually computed in "small examples." For problems of real-world scale, appropriate software tools are used. Mathematical results should be interpretable within the context of the problem. Working with sets, matrix operations, solving systems of linear equations using Gaussian elimination, linear optimization with the Simplex algorithm, differentiation of functions with one or more variables, and optimization of functions with or without constraints.
Criteria for evaluation Short quizzes throughout the semester or a final exam at the end of the semester. Bonus tasks and drop results. Additionally, voluntary peer learning with mutual evaluation among students.
Methods Flipped classroom with theory delivered through self-made videos and an online Q&A session for working through practice problems together.
