Kompetenzen
(*)Students have a repertoire of basic language which enables them to deal with everyday situations with predictable content, though they will generally have to compromise the message and search for words.

They are able to

  • understand and discuss written articles and audio texts (e.g. interviews) on current topics in contemporary German speaking countries and internationally
  • write a report (e.g. on an internship experience)
  • write and respond to an informal or (semi-)formal email (e.g. an invitation)
  • conduct a telephone call in an informal or (semi-)formal context
  • seek for and give advice in a work situation
  • organise or plan an event in a team
  • talk about and write essays on familiar subjects or current topics in contemporary society and economics in German speaking countries and globally and expressing their own opinion. (e.g. social media, tourism, education, hobbies,…)
Fertigkeiten Kenntnisse
(*)Students are able to successfully apply all four skill areas on a B1.1 level according to the CEFR with a special focus on business related and formal communication contexts.

  • Listening comprehension

e.g.: Can understand the main points made in clear standard language or a familiar variety on familiar matters regularly encountered at work, school, leisure, etc., including short narratives.
Can follow in outline straightforward short talks on familiar topics, provided these are delivered in clearly articulated standard language or a familiar variety.

  • Reading comprehension

e.g.: Can understand most factual information that they are likely to come across on familiar subjects of interest, provided they have sufficient time for rereading.
Can understand a simple personal letter, e-mail or post in which the person writing is talking about familiar subjects (such as friends or family) or asking questions on these subjects.

  • Speaking

e.g.: Can describe everyday aspects of their environment e.g. people, places, a job or study experience.
Can give short, basic descriptions of events and activities.
Can describe plans and arrangements, habits and routines, past activities and personal experiences.
Can express opinions on subjects relating to everyday life, using simple expressions.
Can give simple reasons to justify a viewpoint on a familiar topic.

  • Writing

e.g.: Can produce short, simple essays on topics of interest.
Can describe everyday aspects of their environment e.g. people, places, a job or study experience in linked sentences.
Can produce very brief reports in a standard conventionalised format, which pass on routine factual information and state reasons for actions.

  • Oral interaction

Can interact with reasonable ease in structured situations and short conversations, provided the other person helps if necessary. Can manage simple, routine exchanges without undue effort; can ask and answer questions and exchange ideas and information on familiar topics in predictable everyday situations.
Can offer advice on simple matters within their field of experience.
Can use telecommunications for everyday personal or professional purposes, provided they can ask for clarification from time to time.

  • Of syntax (e.g. sentence order rules in questions and statements, Imperativ),
  • of pronunciation rules (segmental, e.g. long and short vowels, and suprasegmental rules, e.g. word stress),
  • of grammar (e.g. Konjunktiv II, Imperativ, temporal adverbs)
  • of pragmatics (e.g. company events, get-togethers and holidays, communicating in informal and (semi-) formal situations in German speaking countries).
Beurteilungskriterien (*)Presence in class meetings is mandatory (min. 80%).

Ongoing assessment consists of the following components:
Oral and written examination
Oral presentations
Written assignments

Students can reach a maximum of 100 points (=100%) in total:
A minimum of 55% in total is necessary to obtain a positive grade.

The tests and exams include grammar and vocabulary questions as well as tasks on all four skill areas (listening comprehension. reading comprehension, writing + speaking/oral interaction in the oral exam.)
Especially in the final oral and written exam there is a strong focus on applying the language.

Individual feedback is given orally in class and in written form (on Moodle) throughout the semester.

Lehrmethoden (*)Input on grammar and vocabulary (mostly deductively – finding out rules by analysing reading and audio texts first)
Acitivities to practise applied language in class and at home:
Reading and listening comprehension (e.g. summarising and deducting from texts, answering questions and discussing problems)
Speaking and oral interaction (e.g. playing dialogues in different informal and formal situations, discussing relevant themes and familiar subjects in contemporary German speaking societies and globally, giving advice)
Writing: eligible mandatory written homework assignments on topics currently discussed in class.
Homework exercises and tasks for the revision of grammar and vocabulary.
Varying social forms in each class meeting: individual, pairs, groups, plenum.
