Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students are able to perform a statistical analysis using statistical software. They have a basic knowledge of parameter estimation and hypothesis testing and are able to interpret results obtained from statistical software. Moreover, students can do simple statistical calculations “by-hand”.

Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcome 2 (LO2): Analyze toy data sets “by-hand”.

Learning Outcome 3 (LO3): Analyze data sets (synthetic or real) using statistical software.

Course Topics:

Part I: Descriptive statistics
  1. Frequency tables, parameters of location and scale; visualizing univariate distributions
  2. Bivariate data analysis (general structure of contingency tables, measures of association)
Part II: Probability theory
  1. Basics of probability (random experiments, independence, Bayes’ theorem)
  2. Discrete distributions (basics, binomial and hypergeometric distribution, approximation)
  3. Continuous distributions (basics, normal distribution, z-scores, quantiles, symmetric intervals)
Part III: Statistical inference
  1. Basic concepts (sampling distribution, unbiased estimators, standard errors)
  2. Estimation (point estimation, confidence intervals)
  3. Null hypothesis significance testing
  4. One-sample t-test
  5. One-way ANOVA / F-test
  6. Chi-squared test, correlation test
  7. Simple linear regression (basic equation, OLS, t-test, prediction, coefficient of determination)

Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcome 1 (LO1): Recall the basic concepts of statistics.

Criteria for evaluation In total, students have the possibility to reach 100 points. 60 points on the exam, and 40 points on the homework exercises during the semester. A minimum of 30 points on the exam and 20 points on the homework exercises is necessary for a positive grade. For the exam, slides of the lecture as well as personal cheat-sheets can be used by the students.

Final grades will be given as follows:

PointsGrade
89 - 1001
79 – 882
65 – 783
50 – 644
0 - 495

Synchronization of learning outcomes and assessments:
LO1: Written Exam + Homework Exercises
LO2: Written Exam + Homework Exercises
LO3: Written Exam + Homework Exercises

Methods At the beginning of each lesson, students have to present homework exercises in front of the class, which are about the topics covered in the previous lesson. After this, a classical lecture given by the course instructor follows.
