(*)Students will be able to identify a business issue (LO3) in the context of organizational control, apply the instruments they have learnt to business issues (LO3 and LO4), justify their choice (LO4) and to support management with information in the context of decision-making (LO3).

(*)Learning Outcomes

(LO1 and LO2): Using the correct terminology, explain the key ideas of cost and management accounting and the primary functions of cost and management accounting and explain the different instruments in the context of application.
(LO3): Making decisions on the basis of the instruments learnt (materials recording procedure, accounting treatment of different types of costs, calculation of the economic order quantity, performing cost assignment for indirect costs, calculating the break-even-point in single and multi-product settings and decide for relevant costs and instruments depending on the respective decision-making situation)
(LO4): Be able to critically scrutinize the instruments learnt and to use alternative instruments in a justified manner depending on the respective decision-making situation

  1. Introduction to cost and management accounting
  2. Introduction to cost terms and concepts
  3. Accounting for direct costs
  4. Cost assignment for indirect costs
  5. Process costing
  6. Cost-volume profit analysis
  7. Measuring relevant costs for decision making

Learning Outcomes

(LO1): Recall, define and recognise the basic concepts of cost and management accounting.
(LO2): Compare the different instruments learnt and explain different situations of application.
(LO3): Be able to carry out calculations and use the instruments learnt as appropriate to the business situation.
(LO4): Decide independently on the use of certain instruments based on case studies and thus providing appropriate information for management decision purposes.

Beurteilungskriterien (*)In total, students have the possibility to reach 60 points, 45 (75 %) for the exam and 15 (25 %) for the three homework exercises (case studies). A minimum of 23 points at the exam is necessary in order to obtain a positive grade.

  1. Exam: Individual exam, there is a possibility to repeat it in case of negative results or scheduling issues (retry exam). The exam consists of theoretical as well as practical (modelling/application of solution algorithms) questions. It lasts 45 minutes.
  2. Homework: there are 3 homeworks in a total volume of 500 – 1.000 words which have to be submitted via moodle. Feedback is provided via moodle and the case studies are discussed in the following appointment.

Lehrmethoden (*)The course uses a combination of different teaching methods in order to

  1. maximize the motivation and attention of the students.
  2. address the learning objectives in the didactically best way.

This includes the following

  • Teacher-centred information inputs, supported by slides and literature
  • Development of content in collaboration with the students on the black board
  • Development of solutions to exercise problems in class, followed by joint discussions with the whole group
  • Individual homework on the case study
