Kompetenzen
(*)Students will be able to understand, apply, and explain the basic concepts of biotechnology and its technical applications.
Fertigkeiten Kenntnisse
(*)More specifically, upon completion of the course, they will be able to: • Carry out fundamental industrially relevant organic synthesis procedures following reported literature procedures on a multi-gram laboratory scale. (k3, k6) • Purify and isolate the targeted compound using industrially approved isolation and purification methods such as distillation, (bed)filtration, and crystallization. (k3, k4) • Assess and evaluate sustainability aspects of materials and industrially relevant organic synthesis procedures. (k2, k4, k5) • Assess and evaluate safety-relevant aspects of materials and industrially relevant organic synthesis procedures. (k2, k4, k5) • Apply the safety-relevant aspects to the execution of industrially relevant synthesis processes and the handling of hazardous materials. (k2, k3, k6) • Characterize and analyze organic-technical products by refractive index, melting point, spectroscopic means, (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy), thermal analyses (thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry), and application-related testing. (k3, k4, k5) • Document their laboratory work in a protocol in a scientific writing style. (k4, k5) (*)The course is divided into three consecutive sections devoted to the following experimental manipulations and industrially-relevant products: • Preparation, separation, purification, characterization, and application-related testing of biodiesel based on renewable resources (e.g., fats and oils). • Preparation, separation, purification, characterization, and application-related testing of surface-active substances based on renewable resources (e.g., fats and oils) and fossil-based feedstocks. • Perform reactions that include challenges in terms of kinetics and reaction energy employing differently controlled radical polymerizations.
