Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students are able to understand the relevance of recycling plastics and assign the key process steps to the recycling technologies. Essential contents are legal framework conditions (EU), different end-of-life scenarios, corresponding waste management solutions, overview of recycling technologies, detailed process steps of mechanical recycling, relevance of recyclate quality and outlooks on design for and from recycling as well as digitalization. Building on this essential content, students are able to derive the appropriate recycling technology based on existing product waste streams [k2] and assess the resulting recyclate quality [k5].

Skills Knowledge
In particular, they are able to

- Know legal EU framework conditions and derive exemplary measures from them [k1, k2]

- select and critically review recycling technologies according to the required recyclate qualities [k5]

- design and evaluate the process steps of mechanical recycling [k3, k6]

Fundamentals of the materials science of plastics, recycling management, waste management and process engineering in recycling.
Criteria for evaluation Written exam with transparent point system and corresponding grading.
Methods Lecture on the fundamental aspects and selective joint discussion of the course content. Self-study is used to consolidate knowledge and acquire skills.
