Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to integrate and apply advanced knowledge in the broader area of laser based spectroscopic analysis of materials. They can solve problems in the area of laser based analysis of the chemical composition of materials.

This exercise is methodologically complemented by the lecture Laser Analytics.

Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • apply their mathematical and physical knowledge for deriving key equations and quantities in laser-based material analysis (k3);
  • describe and critically evaluate different methodologies used to analyze the chemical composition of materials (k2/k5);
  • collect and break down information from the scientific literature (k4);
  • apply fundamental equations in laser analytics for the determination of analyte concentrations (k3/k4).
During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of laser analytics:

  • relevant properties of laser radiation in materials analysis;
  • basic statistical concepts for evaluation of measured data;
  • calibration, validation, random sampling;
  • dispersion of optical refractive index, spectral resolution;
  • types of optical spectrometers;
  • examples in absorption spectroscopy;
  • examples in Raman, infrared and fluorescence spectroscopy.
Criteria for evaluation Exercise questions will be provided to the students by the lecturer. Evaluation will be based on the number of successfully solved exercise questions and the active participation in the exercise class.
Methods Students are expected to solve exercise questions as part of their self-study. The solutions are presented and discussed in class.
