Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students are able to analyze and evaluate the behavior of power electronic components and circuits. They understand the associated application possibilities and limitations and can justify them. They will also be able to calculate the cooling processes of semiconductor components and design associated systems and understand and analyze selected rectifier circuits and converter topologies.

The level for considering the mentioned topics roughly corresponds to the relevant chapters in Specovius, Joachim: Grundkurs Leistungselektronik, 7. Auflage, Springer Verlag (2015) and Trzynadlowski, Andrzej M. (Ed.): Power Electronic Converters and Systems, 1st ed., IET, (2016).

Skills Knowledge
  • Properties of power semiconductors (k4/k5)
  • Circuits for the operation and protection of power semiconductors (k5)
  • Cooling of power semiconductors (k5/6)
  • Circuits for rectification and conversion of voltage and current characteristics with and without control or regulation (k5/6)
  • Basic aspects and areas of application of power electronics
  • Power semiconductor devices
  • Control- and protective circuits
  • Cooling of semiconductor devices
  • Uncontrolled rectifiers
  • Phase-controlled rectifiers
  • Line-commutated converters
