Learning Outcomes
Competences
After successful completion of the course, students are able to explain basic concepts of thermodynamics in the areas listed below. They can transfer their knowledge to systematically solve more advanced physical problems in the area of thermodynamics. Furthermore, they are able to apply problem-solving methods to specific examples.

This exercise is methodically complemented by the lecture Theoretische Thermodynamik.

Skills Knowledge
Upon attending the course, students learn the following skills. They are able to

  • explain physical problems and concepts as well as mathematical solutions (k2);
  • develop mathematical solutions to physical problems in the field of thermodynamics (k3);
  • transfer concepts and solution approaches to new and unknown problems and select and apply suitable mathematical methods (k3/k4);
  • present their solutions to the group and discuss different approaches (k3/k4).
During the course, students acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of thermodynamics:

  • simple thermodynamic systems;
  • relevant macroscopic variables and state variables, state and equilibrium, equations of state;
  • temperature, heat and work;
  • simple microscopic models from classical and quantum mechanics;
  • laws of thermodynamics;
  • cyclic processes, heat engines, heat capacities, Carnot cycle;
  • classical and statistical derivation of entropy;
  • reversible and irreversible processes;
  • fundamental relations;
  • thermodynamic potentials;
  • theoretical equilibrium conditions, thermodynamic stability, simple phase equilibria.
Criteria for evaluation (1) number of successfully solved proglems, (2) quality of presentation/participation in the exercise class and, eventually, (3) written tests
Details will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
