Competences
• Students are familiar with basic safety principles in the chemical laboratory and are able to implement them. • Students are able to carry out basic chemical laboratory techniques independently according to precise instructions. • Students are able to document their results appropriately.
Skills Knowledge
• know frequently used chemicals (k1) • are able to recognize the hazard potential of chemicals using the GHS symbols (k2) • prepare experiments based on given experimental instructions (k1-k2), carry them out (k3), document the results properly (k3) and interpret them (k1,k2,k4) • carry out various separation procedures and simple analysis methods independently and safely (k3) • be able to evaluate different methods of volume measurement (k5) • be able to carry out basic calculations relevant to laboratory work (k3) • GHS symbols, warning / prohibition / rescue / fire protection symbols, safety data sheets • personal protective equipment, protective equipment in the chemical laboratory • proper disposal of small quantities of chemical waste • basic laboratory equipment • basics of chemical calculation: different types of concentrations, dilutions, density, yields • analytical techniques: refractive index, melting point • working techniques: pipetting/measuring, weighing, preparing solutions, filtration, distillation, extraction, recrystallization, sublimation • writing a laboratory journal and protocols
Criteria for evaluation Successful participation, protocols and exam.
