Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students are able to understand and apply the fundamental concepts and principles of tribology in the context of polymer materials. They learn to analyze tribological systems, assess friction, wear, and lubrication in polymers, and select appropriate materials and processes to improve tribological properties.

Skills Knowledge
Specifically, they are able to:

Know and explain basic tribological terms and principles [k1].

Analyze the tribological properties of polymers and evaluate their impact on component performance [k3].

Understand and apply methods for measuring friction and wear in polymer materials [k2].

Identify the interactions between material properties, surface structure, and tribological performance [k4].

Develop strategies to reduce friction and wear through material selection and surface modification [k5].

Fundamentals of tribology: Definitions, concepts of friction, wear, and lubrication.

Tribological properties of polymer materials: Mechanisms of friction and wear in polymers, influence of environmental conditions.

Testing methods and measurement procedures: Wear tests, friction tests, tribometers, and other testing equipment.

Materials: Tribologically optimized polymers, additives, and fillers.

Application examples: Tribological challenges and solutions in various industries, e.g., seals, medical technology.

Criteria for evaluation Written exam
Evaluation of the home work. The home work involves a short theoretical description of the selected topics and practical work.
This practical work involves some experiments and simulations using a selected material/component geometry/loading/contact configuration.
Methods The Basics of the Polymer Tribology and the Tribology of Biomaterials are explained in blocked lectures
An individual home work is defined for all participants considering their actual specific knowledges and expertise in simulation techniques – from basic to advanced.
The focus of the course is changing, it depends on actual projects and on actual scientific discussion in the tribology community
Language English
Study material Powerpoint files (pdf) will be provided via Kusss and Moodle
Selected books and publications
Student versions of the calculation and simulation software tools will be available
Changing subject? No
