Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students are able to select adequate methods for testing plastics and to characterize frequently used plastics with regard to (thermo)mechanical properties.
Skills Knowledge
Interpret the multi-point characteristics of interpret and compare plastics (k2)

Prepare test specimens, operate test devices and perform data reduction (k3)

Test plastics in terms of polymer physics and differentiate (k4)

Classify bulk to high-performance plastics in terms of (thermo)mechanical properties (k5)

Systematically compile, discuss and present measurement and test results in a team (k6)

Essential property categories and property profiles in polymeric materials; areas of materials testing and characterisation of polymers; standardisation; essential aspects and elements of various testing standards with emphasis on ISO standards (mechanical and non-mechanical properties); testing methods and testing of plastics and composites. Practical course in small groups: Practical exercises in testing polymers; conducting and documenting tests; presentation and interpretation of results.
Criteria for evaluation Active participation in the laboratory exercises; preparation of results and presentation as an exercise team.
Methods 1. explanation of experimental methods and their areas of application; processing and presentation of the measurement and test results as well as presentation in team mode.
2. practical implementation and experiments.

Further information The subject Polymer Technology serves the scientific and technical professional training of polymer technicians and qualifies them for further Master's studies with a polymer technical, economic-technical or chemical-technological orientation.

In particular, the subject of polymer technology serves to convey practical and theoretical teaching content from materials science and testing of polymer materials, general and special characterisation of polymers, plastics processing, plastics machine and tool construction, applied thermal engineering and rheology, dimensioning and design of polymer and composite material components and component testing.

This course is held either in German or English in consultation with the students. At least, lecture notes or book recommendations will be provided in German and English. The examination can be taken in either German or English.
