Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to demonstrate well-founded insights into the field of high-performance materials for sensor and actuator applications. They can explain the theoretical descriptions of material properties and characterization methods. They are capable of applying and extending physical concepts from electrodynamics, thermodynamics and solid state physics to enhance their understanding of these materials.
Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • explain important physical concepts for the characterization of polymers (k2);
  • apply basic knowledge of general physical concepts for the theoretical description of dielectrics and electro-active polymer systems (k3);
  • evaluate various polymer materials for specific applications (k5).
During the course, students will acquire expert knowledge about the electrical properties of dielectric materials and electroactive polymers for sensor and actuator applications. This includes knowledge about

  • characteristics of polymers;
  • dielectric polarization;
  • dielectric polymer materials;
  • impedance spectroscopy;
  • ferroelectric and pyroelectric polymers.
Criteria for evaluation will be announced at the beginning of the course
Methods oral presentation of pre-published slides, in-depth explanations on the blackboard, live demonstrations of experimental methods
