Competences |
Students will learn basic concepts of lightweight design with composite materials with focus on laminated fiber-reinforced polymers. They will understand different failure criteria and gain the fundamental knowledge required to analyze the strength and stiffness behavior of these materials.

Students are able to
- describe the fundamental properties and classifications of composite materials (k1),
- explain the micro-mechanical behavior of a lamina and its impact on composite properties (k2),
- derive the ABD-matrices for various composite laminates (k3),
- understand and examine various failure criteria for composite laminates (k4),
- analyze the macro-mechanical behavior of laminated structures including their deformations and failure modes (k4),
- explain the effects of moisture absorption and thermal influences on laminated composites (k2),
- apply analytical methods to asses degradation behavior in laminated composites after first-ply-failure (k3).

This course introduces students to the basic concepts of lightweight design with composite materials, particularly with laminated fiber-reinforced polymers and provides a fundamental knowledge regarding the strength analysis of such materials.
Course 479POPELDCV12 and 479POPELDCU12 form an integral didactic unit. The learning outcomes described are achieved through the interaction of the two courses.
