Competences
Students are able to select adequate methods for the identification of plastics and to analyze frequently used plastics with regard to their chemical-physical composition and thermal transitions.
Skills Knowledge
Identify and name plastics (k1)

Interpret and compare IR spectra as well as DSC and DMA thermograms of interpret and compare plastics (k2)

Prepare samples, operate IR, DSC and DMA devices and and perform data reduction (k3)

Analyze plastics in terms of polymer physics and differentiate (k4)

Classify bulk to high-performance plastics in relation to the primary structure (k5)

Systematically compile, discuss and present measurement and test results in a team (k6)

As to the characterization of polymeric materials focus will be given to:

  • Infrared-Spectroscopy
  • Differential Scanning Calorimetry
  • Dynamic Mechanical Analysis
Criteria for evaluation
  • Engagement in the lab unit
  • Quality of oral presentation (team) + discussion
  • 2 written exams

This course is held either in German or English in consultation with the students. At least, lecture notes or book recommendations will be provided in German and English. The examination can be taken in either German or English.
