Learning Outcomes
Competences
The students understand the concepts of (also large) networks. They can analyze, design, and build small/local networks.
Skills Knowledge
Students can:

  • Recognize, evaluate and design network topologies (K6)
  • Select the appropriate physical technology for a network/connection (K5)
  • Set up and configure a local network (K3)
  • Enable communication in a local network using static routing (K3)
  • Connect a local network to the Internet using NAT (in both directions) (K5)
  • Identify problems in local networks (K4) and previde correction/improvement suggestions (K5)
  • Select the appropriate communication protocol for an application (K5)
  • Analyse network protocols through packet captures (K4)
  • General principles of networks and network protocols; topologies
  • Layer models (especially TCP/IP and ISO/OSI)
  • Multiplexing, datagram networks, network quality criteria
  • Physical layer: copper/fiber optic cables, encoding, structured cabling
  • Data link layer: framing, error detection/correction, reliability (Acks, pipelining...)
  • Network Layer: Routing, static vs. Dynamic Routing, basics of routing protocols
  • Ethernet, IPv4 (Fragmentation, MTU, ARP, UDP, TCP, QUIC, Multicasts), IPv6 (ND), NAPT
  • Overview of DNS and DHCP
