Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students develop a fundamental understanding of electromagnetic waves in free space, on transmission lines, and in waveguides and are able to use S-parameters or the Smith-Chart to analyze and design passive and active radio-frequency circuits such as amplifiers, oscillators, mixers, or filters.
Skills Knowledge
  • Applying Maxwell's equations for electromagnetic waves (k2, k3)
  • Derive and apply the telegrapher equation (k1, k2, k3)
  • Derive and apply the Smith-Chart for impedance matching (k1, k2, k3)
  • Know the transformation paths in the Smith-Chart and apply them for matching (k1, k3)
  • Construct impedance-, stability-, gain-, noise circles in the Smith-Chart (k3)
  • Understand and apply the Barkhausen criterion for oscillators (k2, k3)
  • Understand and design active RF components such as amplifiers, oscillators, mixers (k2, k3)
  • Understand and design passive RF components with distributed structures (k2, K3)
  • Electromagnetic fields
  • Maxwell equations, wave equation
  • Transmission line theory, telegrapher’s equation
  • Transmission lines and waveguides
  • Reflection at boundary layers and transitions
  • Microwave network analysis, S-parameters
