Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students are able to understand, analyze, assess, and apply the most important concepts, algorithms, and protocols for operating and managing computer networks.
Skills Knowledge
  • Understand, assess, and communicate the fundamental relations and interaction of common networking and network management protocols (K4)
  • Systematically assess, communicate, and apply the requirements of a stable network infrastructure (K3, K4, K5)
  • Understand, analyze, and assess existing network topology and configuration (K4, K5)
  • Apply fundamental network configuration and network management concepts to install and configure network devices (K3)
  • Plan, implement, deploy, and operate core networking services (K6)
  • Basic terminology and concepts
  • Function and application of network management systems and protocols (e.g., SNMP, DHCP, DNS, NTP)
  • Network topology and partitioning (e.g., VLANs)
  • Link aggregation, failover, and load balancing (e.g., LACP, STP)
  • Quality of service (QoS)
  • Routing protocols (e.g., BGP, OSPF),
  • First-hop redundancy (e.g., VRRP, CARP)
  • Software-defined networking (SDN) concepts and protocols (e.g., OpenFlow)
Criteria for evaluation Grading is based on three components: active participation in lectures and lab exercises, a theoretical exam to prove knowledge and understanding, and completion and (written) presentation of practical exercises to verify that students possess the skills to put their knowledge into practice. All three parts must be completed successfully to complete the course.
Methods Lecture including discussions as well as accompanying practical lab exercises; Practical exercises in a lab environment that students prepare and present on their own.
