Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the laboratory course, students have become acquainted with the experimental and/or theoretical techniques at the Institute of Applied Physics. They will be skilled in problem-solving, integrating scientific literature into their work and refining their work through feedback. This course will equip students with the necessary competencies for carrying out their MSc thesis project at the Institute of Applied Physics.
Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • to work on a clearly defined physical problem within a given period of time largely independently using scientific methods (k4);
  • execute complex experimental procedures using state-of-the-art instrumentation relevant to ongoing research at the Institute of Applied Physics (k3/k4);
  • prepare and handle samples (k3);
  • identify problems that arise during work, analyze them and develop solutions independently (k5/k6);
  • analyze experimental data (k4);
  • assess the quality and relevance of their own results and evaluate them in a scientific context (k5);
  • independently find relevant literature and master literature research techniques (k3);
  • analyze and summarize the obtained results in a report (k4/k5).
During the course, students will acquire practical knowledge about setting up and/or conducting various experiments and/or theoretical calculations in the area of applied physics. The topics will be discussed with the supervisor before the start of the practical course.
Criteria for evaluation A combined grade will be determined, based on the preparation and execution of the experiment, the written report and the meetings with the supervisor, during which the results will be discussed.
Methods Students are performing advanced experiments in a research laboratory.
