Kompetenzen
(*)Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to solve problems in the area of special relativity (and optionally general relativity).

This exercise is methodologically complemented by the lecture Relativistic Theory.

Fertigkeiten Kenntnisse
(*)Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • understand and explain basic concepts of tensor calculus and their application to physical problems (k2/k3);
  • apply their mathematical and physical knowledge to solve key problems in special relativity (and optionally in general relativity) (k3);
  • link concepts from non-Euclidean geometry (in particular pseudo-Euclidean space) to physical systems (k2-k4).
(*)During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of relativistic theory:

  • curvilinear coordinate systems;
  • tensor calculus;
  • non-Euclidean geometry;
  • pseudo-Euclidean space;
  • inertial systems;
  • Galilei and Lorentz transformation;
  • k-calculus;
  • Minkowski space;
  • relativistic kinematics;
  • relativistic paradoxes;
  • relativistic mechanics;
  • covariant formulation of electrodynamics;
  • basic concepts of general relativity (optional).
Beurteilungskriterien (*)Evaluation will be based on the number of successfully solved exercises, quality of the presentation and active participation in the exercise class and written exams where necessary. Details are announced at the beginning of the semester.
Lehrmethoden (*)Students are expected to solve exercise questions. The solutions are then presented and discussed in class.
