Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of astrophysical processes. The students can carry out calculations to estimate the likelihood of astrophysical events. They are able to interpret astronomical data sets and to characterize various astrophysical objects, including stars and galaxies.
Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • explain and summarize key models used to model stellar dynamics (k1/k2);
  • compute radiative processes in astrophysical settings (k4);
  • validate and critically discuss the range of validity of different approximations used in astrophysical settings (k5).
During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of astrophysics:

  • astronomical coordinate systems and unit systems;
  • establishing a cosmic distance ladder;
  • formation of stars, planets and galaxies;
  • overview over astrophysical objects;
  • final stages of stellar evolution;
  • gravitational dynamics, (solar systems, black holes).
Criteria for evaluation written and/or oral exams
Details and evaluation criteria will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
Methods The course primarily consists of lectures on fundamental and current topics in theoretical astrophysics.
