(*)Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the foundation and application of mathematical methods used in theoretical physics. The topics covered in the course complement the topics taught in the mandatory BSc mathematics courses. The specific topics vary and possible topics are listed below.
This lecture is methodologically complemented by the exercise Advanced Mathematical Methods in Physics.
Fertigkeiten Kenntnisse
(*)Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • understand and explain mathematical derivations of important theorems (k2);
  • characterize the mathematical methods taught in this course in relation to the mathematics taught in BSc courses (k4);
  • differentiate between mathematical methods, and recognize which physical problems they can be applied to (k4).
(*)During the course, students will acquire knowledge about advanced mathematical methods in physics, selected from the topics below:

  • complex calculus and theorem of residues;
  • Fourier analysis;
  • Greensfunction formalism for partial differential equations;
  • nonlinear differential equations;
  • variational methods in physics;
  • functional analysis;
  • integral equations;
  • distributions;
  • topology;
  • random-matrix theory.
