Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the foundation and application of mathematical methods used in theoretical physics. The topics covered in the course complement the topics taught in the mandatory BSc mathematics courses. The specific topics vary and possible topics are listed below.

This exercise is methodologically complemented by the lecture Advanced Mathematical Methods in Physics.

Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • carry out the mathematical derivations of important theorems from the lecture (k3);
  • carry out derivations of mathematical relations related to but not from the lecture (k4);
  • apply the mathematical methods derived in the class to other physical problems (k3).
During the course, students will acquire knowledge about advanced mathematical methods in physics, selected from the topics below:

  • complex calculus and theorem of residues;
  • Fourier analysis;
  • Greensfunction formalism for partial differential equations;
  • nonlinear differential equations;
  • variational methods in physics;
  • functional analysis;
  • integral equations;
  • distributions;
  • topology;
  • random-matrix theory.
Criteria for evaluation Evaluation will be based on (1) the number/quality of successfully solved exercises and, if applicable, (2) written tests.
Details will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
Methods Students solve exercise problems as homework and/or jointly during the exercise class. Discussion of the course topics and solution of exercises.
