Lernergebnisse
Kompetenzen
(*)Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of advanced principles and concepts of quantum mechanics, covering the areas listed below. They are able to apply the theoretical concepts to simple and advanced physical model systems.

This lecture is building on topics introduced in the lecture and exercise Theoretische Quantenmechanik I. It is methodologically complemented by the exercise Theoretical Quantum Mechanics II.

Fertigkeiten Kenntnisse
(*)Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • explain and summarize key concepts used to describe angular momenta and their coupling in quantum mechanics (k1/k2);
  • describe the fundamental concepts of the time evolution of quantum systems, and assess the advantages of different approaches to the time evolution of a given time-dependent quantum system (k1-k4);
  • understand the relativistic description of the electron and the non-relativistic limit, and decide for advanced systems whether a non-relativistic limit applies (k1-k3);
  • interpret basic principles of the quantization of electromagnetic fields, and apply the concepts of adsorption, spontaneous/induced emission of photons to other quantum systems (k1-k3);
  • engage with current research topics in the field (k5).
(*)During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of quantum mechanics:

  • angular momentum algebra including spin;
  • addition of angular momenta;
  • fundamental approaches to the time evolution and time-dependent perturbation theory including Fermi’s Golden Rule;
  • variational principle and approximation methods;
  • relativistic quantum mechanics of the electron and the non-relativistic limit;
  • coupling of Dirac particles to electromagnetic fields;
  • field quantization;
  • Glauber/coherent states;
  • photon adsorption and emission.
