Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and established concepts of advanced solid state physics, covering the areas listed below. They are aware of open questions and can describe current research topics in advanced solid state physics research. They are able to critically analyze and present a recent research article.

This lecture is building on topics introduced in the lecture and exercise Festkörperphysik. It is methodologically complemented by the exercise Advanced Solid State Physics.

Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • explain and summarize key models used to describe advanced solid state systems (k1/k2);
  • describe and compare the properties of different advanced solid state systems, identifying their unique characteristics and common underlying principles (k2);
  • engage with current research topics in the field and discuss recent developments (k5);
  • present and critically assess scientific publications, developing skills in synthesizing information and articulating insights (k5).
During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of solid state physics:

  • inorganic semiconductors;
  • phase, order and symmetry;
  • critical phenomena;
  • phase transitions;
  • correlations;
  • molecular crystals;
  • quasicrystals;
  • liquid crystals;
  • magnetism and magnetic phases;
  • superconductors;
  • ferroics;
  • molecular magnets.
Criteria for evaluation Evaluation criteria will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
Methods The course primarily consists of lectures on fundamental and current topics of advanced solid state physics.
