Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and established concepts of statistical physics listed below. They can solve problems in the area of quantum statistics and statistics of complex systems while working with the scientific literature.

This exercise builds on topics introduced in the lecture and exercise Statistical Physics I. It is methodologically complemented by the lecture Statistical Physics II.

Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • apply their mathematical and physical knowledge for deriving key equations and quantities (k3);
  • implement approximative methods to determine (quantum) statistical properties of complex systems (k2/k5);
  • connect the theoretical formalisms with experimental data from literature (k3/k4) and examine their validity (k5).
During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of statistical physics:

  • density matrix, symmetry of many particle wave functions, ideal boson and fermion gases, black body radiation law, specific heat of solids;
  • real gases, phase transitions, mean field theory, cumulant expansion, Ising model, simple solutions and mixtures;
  • polymers and proteins, Flory-Huggins theory, helix-coil transitions, optical properties of protein-bound pigments.
Criteria for evaluation Evaluation will be based on the number of successfully solved exercises, quality of the presentation and active participation in the exercise class.
Methods Students are expected to solve exercise questions as part of their self-study. The solutions are then presented and discussed in class.
