Kompetenzen
(*)Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and established concepts of soft and complex matter physics, covering the areas listed below. They can describe current research topics and open questions in soft, complex and active matter research. They are able to critically analyze and present a recent research article.

This lecture is methodologically complemented by the exercise Physics of Soft and Complex Matter.

Fertigkeiten Kenntnisse
(*)Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • explain and summarize key models used to describe soft and complex matter systems (k1/k2);
  • describe and compare the properties of different soft and complex matter systems, identifying their unique characteristics and common underlying principles (k2);
  • engage with current research topics in the field and discuss recent developments (k5);
  • present and critically assess scientific publications, developing skills in synthesizing information and articulating insights (k5).
(*)During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of soft and complex matter physics:

  • ideal and real polymers;
  • polymer networks and polymer materials;
  • linear and non-linear viscoelasticity;
  • stimulus-responsive polymers;
  • phase transitions;
  • colloids and granular matter;
  • amphiphiles;
  • liquid crystals;
  • biological and synthetic molecular motors;
  • microswimmers and active Brownian particles;
  • collective motion;
  • active nematics.
