Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and established concepts of soft and complex matter physics. They can solve problems in the area of soft and complex matter physics while working with the scientific literature.

This exercise is methodologically complemented by the lecture Physics of Soft and Complex Matter.

Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • apply their mathematical and physical knowledge for deriving key equations and quantities in soft and complex matter physics (k3);
  • describe and critically evaluate experimental methodologies used to investigate soft and complex matter systems (k2/k5), with a focus on collecting and breaking down information from the scientific literature (k4);
  • apply fundamental soft matter concepts and equations for the analysis of experimental data (k3/k4).
During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of soft and complex matter physics:

  • ideal and real polymers;
  • polymer networks and polymer materials;
  • linear and non-linear viscoelasticity;
  • stimulus-responsive polymers;
  • phase transitions;
  • colloids and granular matter;
  • amphiphiles;
  • liquid crystals;
  • biological and synthetic molecular motors;
  • microswimmers and active Brownian particles;
  • collective motion;
  • active nematics.
Criteria for evaluation Evaluation will be based on the number of successfully solved exercises, quality of the presentation and active participation in the exercise class.
Methods Students are expected to solve exercise questions as part of their self-study. The solutions are then presented and discussed in class.
