Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to integrate and apply advanced knowledge in the broader area of laser physics and to critically assess experimental methods and theoretical concepts used in this field. They can solve problems in the area of laser physics and applications of laser beams.

This exercise is methodologically complemented by the lecture Laser Physics.

Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • apply their mathematical and physical knowledge for deriving key equations and quantities in laser physics (k3);
  • describe and critically evaluate methodologies used to generate continuous wave and pulsed laser radiation, using different active materials and pump processes (k2/k5);
  • collect and break down information from the scientific literature (k4);
  • apply fundamental equations in laser physics for the analysis of experimental data (k3/k4).
During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of laser physics:

  • fundamentals of electromagnetic radiation;
  • radiation modes and mode density;
  • spectra, line shapes and widths;
  • saturation effects, Fabry Perot resonators;
  • cold and hot cavities;
  • 2-3-4 level systems;
  • generation of short and ultrashort pulses;
  • properties of Gaussian beams;
  • examples of laser applications.
Criteria for evaluation Exercise questions will be provided to the students by the lecturer. Evaluation will be based on the number of successfully solved exercise questions and the active participation in the exercise class.
Methods Students are expected to solve exercise questions as part of their self-study. The solutions are presented and discussed in class.
