Lernergebnisse
Kompetenzen
(*)Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of advanced principles and concepts in quantum mechanics, covering the areas listed below. They are able to select and apply strategies for solving specific problems in the field of advanced quantum theory.

This exercise is building on topics introduced in the lecture and exercise Theoretische Quantenmechanik I. It is methodologically complemented by the lecture Theoretical Quantum Mechanics II.

Fertigkeiten Kenntnisse
(*)Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • apply their mathematical and physical knowledge for deriving key equations, and develop strategies for solving basic problems in advanced quantum mechanics (k3);
  • apply fundamental concepts of time-evolution and equations for the analysis of advanced quantum mechanical systems (k3/k4);
  • describe and critically evaluate concepts/approximations used to investigate Dirac particles coupled to electromagnetic fields, including the non-relativistic limit (k2-k5).
(*)During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of quantum mechanics:

  • angular momentum algebra including spin;
  • addition of angular momenta;
  • fundamental approaches to the time evolution and time-dependent perturbation theory including Fermi’s Golden Rule;
  • variational principle and approximation methods;
  • relativistic quantum mechanics of the electron and the non-relativistic limit;
  • coupling of Dirac particles to electromagnetic fields;
  • field quantization;
  • Glauber/coherent states;
  • photon adsorption and emission.
Beurteilungskriterien (*)Evaluation will be based on (1) the number/quality of successfully solved exercises and, if applicable, (2) written tests.
Details will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
Lehrmethoden (*)Students solve exercise problems as homework and/or jointly during the exercise class.
Discussion of the course topics and solution of exercises.
