Kompetenzen
(*)Upon successful completion of the course students are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and established concepts of the theory of condensed matter, covering the areas listed below. They are able to select and apply strategies for solving specific problems in the field of condensed matter theory.

This exercise is methodologically complemented by the lecture Theory of Condensed Matter.

Fertigkeiten Kenntnisse
(*)Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • apply their mathematical and physical knowledge for deriving key equations and quantities in condensed matter theory (k3);
  • apply fundamental concepts of condensed matter theory and equations for the analysis of condensed matter systems (k3/k4);
  • describe and critically evaluate theoretical methodologies used to investigate condensed matter systems (k2/k5), with a focus on assessing information from the scientific literature (k4).
(*)During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of condensed matter theory:

  • phases of condensed matter;
  • crystalline solids, Bravais lattices, reciprocal lattices;
  • Born-Oppenheimer approximation, lattice dynamics, dynamical matrix, phonons, thermodynamics of the lattice;
  • electrons in a periodic lattice (Bloch theorem);
  • basic description of the electronic structure of metals and semiconductors/ insulators (independent electron picture);
  • basic concepts of many-electron approaches, second quantization, key phenomena beyond the independent electron picture, electron-phonon coupling.
Beurteilungskriterien (*)Evaluation will be based on (1) the number/quality of successfully solved exercises and, if applicable, (2) written tests.
Details will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
Lehrmethoden (*)Students solve exercise problems as homework and/or jointly during the exercise class. Discussion of the course topics and solution of exercises.
